The older we get, the more we enjoy reliving cherished memories. Often these memories take us back to simpler times during childhood or to life changing moments - possibly when we fell in love, married, or were blessed with children of our own. As a goal in our congregation this year, we are aspiring to capture important moments in our lives by recording a personal history. Ideally, each history includes both text and pictures to help catch a glimpse of our lives that we can pass on to following generations.
Our congregation is composed of many Seniors like ourselves, each has a lifetime to draw from. While assisting in the curating of these personal histories, we've been drawn not only to the life stories but also to many beautiful images that have awakened delightful emotions.
With this post, we hope that you too will take a moment to think about how the Lord has blessed your life and the lives of your loved ones. And, if you haven't already, maybe you'll want to begin to assemble your personal history as well.
An absolutely delightful and gracious sister in our branch, whom we have a wonderful connection, grew up in Leoben, the very town we live in. Now retired for many years, she helps care for her sister who lives about 45 minutes away by train. Her mother was a trained pediatric nurse and served during World War II.
After she wed, she and her husband welcomed a precious son into their home. In her personal history she writes that her son was the greatest gift in her life. Life had its wonderful times but also brought challenges. Two years ago in his early fifties, her loving son passed away from lung disease.
Horst is another of our branch members who became full immersed in capturing his personal history. He loves nothing more than being up on the mountains. As the spring in now here we plan to find ourselves there again, reliving memories of days gone by.
I too have been working on my personal history. I grew up in Southern California and one year in the Philadelphia suburbs.
I felt myself very fortunate to be called to the Zürich, Switzerland Mission, which many years ago became part of the Alpine German Speaking Mission where we are now serving. As a young Missionary I served in Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein and Germany. It's wonderful to be serving here again.
After returning to BYU, the Lord blessed use with a miracle. Trudy and I had grown-up in the same congregation in Southern California, but she had moved away while I was serving my mission. While on my mission the Lord had told me that if I would do his work, he would do mine. Miracle of Miracles, she ended up in the same BYU student congregation upon my return. One and a half years later we wed for time and eternity!
As children of a loving Heavenly Father, we are all part of an eternal family. We have a common heritage.
This Easter Week we commemorate the greatest event of all history.
On Palm Sunday, Christ's followers greeted His arrival to Jerusalem.
During this Holy Week...
He instituted the Last Supper - whereby we now take His name upon us and receive of His spirit.
He bled from every pore - as he prayed to take upon himself our sins.
He hung and died on the cross - and gave His life for us.
He rose from the tomb - the first to live again and open the door for eternal life of man.
May this be the heritage we remember and hold most dear.
